White Cedar leaves form fragrant, soft, fan like sprays. This unique leaf form makes this a good choice for windbreaks and snow fences. White Cedar is a mid-sized tree with a cone-shaped crown. Its primary habitat is peat swamp but it also grows in moist uplands. It can be found on rock outcrops and windblown lakeshores but it will appear stunted and deformed. It will tolerate sandy soils with a high water table. Saplings are shade tolerant.
