Snake River Watershed

In recent years the water quality of the lakes and streams of the Snake River Watershed has been declining.  The board meets monthly to accomplish protection and improvement of water quality where needed.  Both the Knife and Groundhouse rivers and their tributaries are part of the watershed.  The watershed encompasses all of Lewis township and portions of Isle Harbor, South Harbor, Onamia, Mudgett, Hayland and Borgholm townships.  The Snake River Watershed wants residents to be aware of the existence of the Snake River Watershed Management Board and how its actions and land use decisions affect the overall quality of the Snake River and its receiving tributaries.  The citizen advisory committee (CAC) is comprised of 12 volunteer members from Aitkin, Pine, Kanabec and Mille Lacs counties, who listen and give input as the group makes decisions.

The watershed consists of 1,010 square miles or 646,000 acres, the Snake River Watershed is the third largest tributary watershed in the St. Croix River Basin.
