SMALL SHRUBS (DECIDUOUS):                                     

CHERRY, NANKING: Fast growing. Reaches 6-10 ft, living 10-15 yrs.  Prefers rich, moist soil.  Pinkish-white flowers appear May, white-yellow-red edible fruit ripen in July.  Fruit widely used as jelly; good for wildlife.

CRANBERRY, HIGHBUSH: Grows moderately up to 16 ft. on well drained, moist cool soils.  White, flat-top clusters of flowers in June turn to scarlet red fruit that drop in clusters. Fruit edible & used for jellies. Loved by birds.

DOGWOOD, REDOSIER: Moderately fast growing to 10 ft. Shade tolerant, adapts to most soils. Small white flowers turn to white berries. Good for deer.

FALSE INDIGO: Grows 6-20 ft. height.  Fragrant pea like foliage, purple-blue upright spike flowers.  Full sun and poor, sandy soil but requires plenty of moisture.  Can survive ice shear in shoreland areas.

BLACK CHOKE - BERRY: Height 3-6 ft. is moderately shade tolerant.  It will sucker freely, so will often spread.  It will grow in poorly-drained to moist well-drained soils.  Growth rate is moderate, black fruit.  Less susceptible to deer browse. 

HAZELNUT: Grows 10-20 feet tall.  Does well in a wide range of well drained soils. Edible nut in thin papery husk.  Eaten by squirrels, jays, deer, grouse, and pheasant.

LILAC, COMMON: Fast growing. Long lived; up to 10+ ft.  Prefers well drained soils,  full sun to bloom.  Can be trimmed into a hedge.  Suckers freely.

RUGOSA ROSE: Mature height is 4-6ft. A thorny bush with attractive pink flowers appearing in June.  Produces root suckers and forms a thicket.

SANDBAR WILLOW: Grows 5' to 10' in height and width. Prefers deep, moist loams, found along stream beds. Survives flooding. Full sun. Dense thickets provide cover to wildlife and game birds.

ELDERBERRY: Grows 10' in height and width. Rich, moist soil, tolerates shade, useful near water. White flowers in early summer, edible fruit in late summer.

LG SHRUB/SMALL TREE (DECIDUOUS):                 

CHOKECHERRY, COMMON: Moderate to fast growing; up to 20-30 ft. Prefers rich loamy, well drained soils.  Fruit dark purple/black, edible-tart. Suckers freely.

CRAB, RED SPLENDOR: Medium growing; up to 20-25 ft. Grows in all soils but prefers moist, well drained soil in full sun.  Flower white to pink.

GREY DOGWOOD: 6' to 10' in height. Shrub like, can be pruned to tree form. Full sun to full shade. Prefers moist, well drained soils but is adaptable to poor soils, dry soils, wet soils, compacted soils, heat and drought. Creamy white fruits in late summer.

PLUM, AMERICAN: Fast growing; up to 20-25 ft. Lives 35-65 yrs.  Prefers loams. 1- 1.5” Plums ripening in Aug to Sept.; edible and used for jellies.

JUNEBERRY (SERVICEBERRY): Height 6-15 ft.  High quality plant for wildlife cover and food.  Purplish-black fruit are edible.  Prefers loam to sandy loam soil.

WILLOW, SANDBAR: Intolerant of shade; 10-15 ft in height; fast growing; root suckering; tolerates wet,  moist, or well-drained soils.

 TALL TREE (DECIDUOUS):           

ASH, GREEN: Moderate growth; up to 30-60 ft. Prefers wide range of upland soils.  Good for farmstead shelterbelts & windbreaks.

BIRCH, PAPER: Height 30-55 ft. Does best in loamy or sandy soils along rivers, lakes or ravines that are well drained by moist; drought intolerant.

BIRCH, RIVER: Height 40-60 ft.  Prefers rich bottomland, broad spreading crown.

BUTTERNUT: Grows rapidly 40-60 ft.  Prefers moist, rich, well drained, loam soils.   Moderately drought tolerant.  Valued for its lumber.

COMMON COTTONWOOD: Rapid growth to 60-80 ft.;  Prefers moist soils, but wide range of soil types.      

HACKBERRY: Moderate growth; 40 to 60 ft. Adaptable to a broad range of soil conditions. Prefers a moist soil but tolerates wet or dry sites.  Fruit is readily eaten by birds and other wildlife.

MAPLE, RED: Medium to rapid growth; up to 40-60ft. Slightly acid sandy loams. Not recommended for farmstead shelterbelts; vigorous sprouting.

MAPLE, SILVER: Fast growing large tree; 40 to 70 ft.  Needs full sun.  Tolerates a wide range of soil types.  Branches can be brittle.

MAPLE, SUGAR: Slow growing; up to 40-60 ft. Lives 75-150+ yrs. Prefers loams & clay loams; shorter-lived on sandy soils.  Excellent for wildlife.

OAK, BUR: Grows 50-80 ft.  Large rugged tree which is extremely adaptable to a wide range of soils and conditions.  Prefers full sun.  Good resistance to oak wilt.

OAK, RED: Grows 50-80ft. Medium growth. Prefers full sun in moist, deep, acidic, well-drained soils, but adaptable to wide range of soil.

OAK, WHITE: Normally found in loam or clay, but fairly tolerant of soil conditions.  Grows to 50-70 ft. height, with 40-80 ft width.

HYBRID POPLAR: Very fast growth 60-80ft. May grow 4-7 ft. per year in a range of soils.  Great rapid shade where needed but suggest planting a longer lived companion tree for long term shade.

EVERGREENS (CONIFERS):              

EASTERN RED CEDAR: Height 30-45ft.  Drought tolerant but prefers moist soils.  Needs full sun.  Excellent for wildlife.  Should not be planted near apple, crabapple, Juneberry or hackberry due to risk of rust damage.

NORTHERN WHITE CEDAR: 15 to 25 ft.  Needs a moist rich soil, somewhat tolerant to wet soils. Will tolerate light shade, but will be more open in growth habit. 

PINE, JACK:  25 to 40 ft.  It will survive on the driest soils in the state, and makes rapid growth during the first 10 to 15 yrs.  The small cones are about 1 1/2 inches long, often strongly curved.  Very shade tolerant; fast growing.

PINE, NORWAY (RED): Moderate to rapid growth; up to 50-80 ft. Lives 200-300 yrs. Prefers light acid sandy soils. Will grow in poorer sites than White Pine but not as poor as Jack Pine. Fair for wildlife.

PINE, WHITE: Rapid growing; up to 80-100 ft. Lives 200-300 yrs. Does well in full/partial sun and variety of soils. Fair for wildlife and farmstead shelterbelts. Not recommended for field windbreaks.

SPRUCE, BLACK: Grows 30-70 ft.  Lives up to 250 years. Native to  bogs and wet peaty soils but will grow well on upland soils, including draughty coarse textured soils.  Shade tolerant.

SPRUCE, NORWAY: Rapid growth; up to 80-100+ ft. Lives approx. 200 yrs. Prefers clays & loams. Drought sensitive.  Very good for wildlife. Highly recommended for farmstead shelterbelts and windbreaks. 

WHITE SPRUCE: Grows 30-60+ ft. Moderate growth rate. Prefers moist, well drained soils, loam to clay. Thrives on a wide variety of soils. Good in windbreaks.  Foliage, twigs eaten by deer; needles eaten by grouse; winter cover for many species. Intermediate shade tolerance. Cold tolerant.

TAMARACK: Height 50-75ft.  A deciduous conifer with short soft needles turning yellow before they drop in the fall.  Often grows in poorly drained wet soils but will thrive in upland moist soil.  Must have full sun.

 

WILDFLOWER GARDEN PACKET: The wildflower garden packet consists of 12 Native Plugs that will include 2 of each: Azure Aster, Wild Bergamot, Black-eyed Susan, Rough Blazing Star, Giant Hyssop, and  Stiff Tickseed, intended for dry to moist sites.  **Available for pick up in June. 

Azure Aster: Blue/Mauve; grows 2-4 ft. high; Sept.-Oct.

Wild Bergamot: Lavender, ½-¾ inch flower; grows 2-3ft high;  July-Aug.

Blackeyed Susan: Yellow flowers; grows2-3 ft. high; June-July.

Rough Blazing Star: Lavender, grows 2-3 ft. high, Aug.-Sept.

Giant Hyssop: Blue; grows 2-4 ft. high, June-Aug.

Stiff Tickseed: Yellow; grows 1-2 ft. high; June-July.

CEDAR BIRD HOUSES: 

WOOD DUCK HOUSE: Place boxes 3’ above high water mark on posts in water or above 20’ in trees.  (Avoid aspens)  Entrances should face

water and be 30-100 ft. from waters edge. Available for pick up now!
