              SWCD Supervisor Elections

The Mille Lacs SWCD is governed by an elected board of supervisors. Each supervisor serves a four year term with individual terms staggered so that no more than 3 terms expire in a given year. This election year, the Mille Lacs SWCD will have three board positions open for election.  Supervisors meet monthly to discuss the business of the SWCD, including state grant allocations to landowners, district conservation priorities, coordination with other local units of government and state agencies, and legislative priorities. To become a candidate you must file for candidacy with the Mille Lacs County Auditor's Office between July 1st and July 15th, complete the Minnesota Affidavit of Candidacy and pay the $20 filling fee. You must live in the district you wish to be elected to. This year supervisor positions are up for election in District 1 (Greenbush, Bogus Brook and Princeton townships), District 2 (Milaca, Borgholm and Milo townships) and  District 4 (North Kathio, South Kathio, South Harbor, Bradbury and Onamia townships).

Mille Lacs SWCD Projects

The Mille Lacs SWCD worked closely with the City of Milaca and the Milaca Friends of the Library to build a large rain garden on the site of the new Milaca Public Library. The rain garden was possible thanks to a Local Water Management Challenge Grant from the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) and much volunteer work from community members and the Milaca Friends of the Library. This rain garden catches and filters storm water that would otherwise have run directly into the Rum River.

Native plants are preferred for rain garden plantings because they do not need fertilizer or watering and their long roots help absorb and filter polluted run off and control erosion.

Mille Lacs SWCD 2007 Outstanding Conservationist!

Milaca resident Shelley Larson was honored at the MASWCD annual convention in Rochester, MN for being the Mille Lacs SWCD 2007 Outstanding Conservationist. Shelley was chosen because of her achievements in educating the community on the protection of our soil and water resources. As past president of the Milaca Friends of the Library, Shelley was the driving force behind designing, constructing and planting the large rain garden on the grounds of the new City of Milaca Public Library.
